New York Institute for Special Education
The NY Institute (formerly the New York School for the Blind) broadened its mission to include students with a wide range of disabilities, thus necessitating a theatre with very special requirements. The 200-seat performance space was created from an existing two-story library. The tall windows on the upstage wall of the space were retained so that the room could be day lit for classes. Drapery was installed so the space could be darkened for performances. The stage is level with the entry for easy access for children with disabilities. The seating has generous row spacing to permit faculty and staff ease of access to aid those students needing assistance.

The space also received new stage lighting, as well as a new interior design selected for durability and to provide a calm, warm and safe environment.
